Jefferson Aleman - Bike touring, photography, and history of Florida
I am Jefferson Aleman, a long-distance cyclist, Florida Master Naturalist, photographer, and author of the Discovering Florida series. I began this project in 2010 with the goal of documenting the state through direct physical exploration rather than conventional travel writing.
Over the years, I have ridden thousands of miles across Florida—through coastal regions, rural communities, agricultural corridors, historic downtowns, former rail lines, state parks, wildlife management areas, and small towns often overlooked in mainstream narratives. Each route is researched, traveled, photographed, and recorded as part of a larger geographic and historical study of the state.
My work combines field observation with local history, infrastructure analysis, environmental context, and documentary photography. I am particularly interested in how landscapes evolve over time: how railroads shaped settlement patterns, how highways redirected growth, how agricultural regions transformed, and how natural systems coexist with development.
Discovering Florida is structured as a numbered series of cycling routes organized into volumes. Each route functions both as a standalone exploration and as part of a broader archive. The intention is not to romanticize the landscape, but to document it clearly—real places, real names, and verifiable historical context.
Through this long-term project, I aim to create a durable geographic record of Florida that extends beyond its tourist image and reflects its layered history, environmental diversity, and ongoing transformation.
