Route #11 Lansing - Ona - Fort Green - Bowling Green

College Hill Community Center
This route crosses the rural heart of Hardee County, linking communities historically connected to cattle ranching, agriculture, and the early communication routes of inland Florida. The route passes through Lansing, Ona, and Fort Green before reaching Bowling Green, the current county seat.

Ona is one of the oldest communities in the region and still retains a strong ranching character, inherited from the tradition of the Florida crackers. Fort Green, in turn, takes its name from an old fort built during the Seminole Wars, when the United States Army established a network of defensive positions throughout the interior of the state.

The landscape is dominated by broad pastures, cattle fences, and secondary roads that have changed little over the decades. Low population density and continuity in land use make it possible to observe an interior Florida where the economy and way of life have remained relatively stable in contrast to the accelerated urbanization seen in other regions.

The complete route and its historical context are included in Discovering Florida – Volume 1.
