Coconut Grove was a key meeting point for sailors, traders, and Indigenous communities long before the founding of the modern city. The route concludes at the Miami Circle, a unique archaeological site composed of a series of circular holes carved into the limestone bedrock, attributed to the Tequesta people and dated to more than two thousand years ago.
The contrast between today’s intense urbanization and the archaeological remains visible along the route helps reveal the area’s deep historical layers. Roads, skyscrapers, and modern marinas coexist with spaces that testify to continuous human occupation long before European arrival.
The complete route and its historical context are included in Discovering Florida – Volume 1.
