Route #31 Chokoloskee - Everglades City – Immokalee

Ted Smallwood Store
Cycling route between the islands of the Ten Thousand Islands and the agricultural interior of southwest Florida

This route connects Chokoloskee and Everglades City, two of the oldest settlements in southwest Florida, with the inland town of Immokalee. The route passes through coastal landscapes, mangroves, and marshes before entering the interior of the peninsula, reflecting the historical transition between sea-oriented communities and agricultural areas.

Chokoloskee was inhabited for centuries by the Calusa and later by communities dedicated to fishing and coastal trade. Everglades City consolidated in the late nineteenth century as an administrative center and access point to the Ten Thousand Islands, playing a key role in the early history of the national park.

The final stretch toward Immokalee presents a radically different environment, marked by large agricultural expanses and settlements linked to field labor. The city has historically been a meeting point for migrant communities and an economic hub of the interior of Collier County.
