Route #51 Harrisburg - Fisheating Creek - Venus – Palmdale

Feeding a croc during a show in Gatorama, Palmdale, FL
This cycling route enters Glades and Highlands counties, crossing one of the most solitary and evocative regions of interior Florida. Coinciding with the Halloween season, the route links former settlements now turned into ghost towns, such as Harrisburg, Hall City, Tasmania, Venus, and Palmdale—communities that emerged around the railroad, cattle ranching, and natural resource extraction, and that over time were gradually abandoned.

The landscape alternates between vast cattle ranches and open plains with wetlands and dense forests, where vegetation encroaches upon old roads and forgotten structures. One of the key points along the route is Fisheating Creek, one of the main natural preserves in southern Florida and a tributary of Lake Okeechobee. This ecological corridor hosts extraordinary biodiversity, including alligators, black bears, panthers, wild boars, and a wide variety of birds, and also preserves archaeological remains of ancient Indigenous cultures.

The journey follows narrow, quiet roads that seem to disappear into the horizon, reinforcing the sense of isolation and mystery characteristic of this region known as Bone Valley, rich in fossils and phosphates. The nearby presence of places such as Gatorama or the facilities of The Venus Project adds a singular contrast between wild nature, forgotten history, and alternative visions of the future.

The complete route, together with its detailed historical context, is part of Discovering Florida – Volume 3.
