Route #97 Lakeport - Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation - Lake Istokpoga

In the Seminole Reservation at Brighton Florida
This 84-mile round-trip route crosses a broad rural corridor between Lake Okeechobee and Lake Istokpoga, moving through the agricultural and ranching heart of south-central Florida. The ride links scattered communities and open landscapes shaped by canals, cattle lands, and vast Caladium fields that supply most of the bulbs sold worldwide.

The route begins in Lakeport on the western shore of Lake Okeechobee and follows the Herbert Hoover Dike and Harney Pond Road, tracing waterways such as Harney Pond and Fisheating Creek. It then enters the Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation, where traditional architecture, language, and cattle operations remain central to Seminole life.

From there, the ride continues into the Florida Heartland, crossing large agricultural tracts and reaching the southern edge of the Lake Wales Ridge, where gentle elevation changes appear near Lake Placid. After passing through Bear Hollow, Parker Island, Highland Park Estates, and Sunvale, the route reaches Lake Istokpoga, one of Florida’s largest inland lakes, before turning back toward Lakeport.

Route #77 Bermont – Joshua – Placid Lakes – Childs – Hicoria

Bison in Florida
Route #77 travels through the rural heart of Florida, west of Lake Okeechobee, covering approximately 105 round-trip miles across the Florida Heartland. The journey begins in Bermont, a former timber settlement now vanished at the northern edge of Babcock Ranch, and passes through wide expanses of cattle ranches, citrus groves, and protected lands that define this agricultural region of central Florida.

Along the way, the route links former ghost towns and small communities that grew around railroads and sawmills, including Sparkman, Joshua, and Childs, as well as historic sites connected to military facilities later repurposed after the world wars. Crossing Charlotte, DeSoto, and Highlands counties, the itinerary reflects the cycles of development and decline that shaped the interior of the peninsula.

The route reaches environmentally significant areas such as Placid Lakes and the preserves associated with the Lake Wales Ridge Ecosystem, home to rare habitats and endemic species. Its final passage through Hicoria, once a rail and farming settlement, completes a journey that documents the cultural, natural, and historical layers of Florida’s inland landscapes.

This route can be found in Discovering Florida – Volume 4.

Route #55 Indiantown - Okeechobee – Lorida

Okeechobee City Hall
This cycling route enters one of the most rural and least traveled areas of south-central Florida, crossing Martin, Okeechobee, and Highlands counties. The route runs through open landscapes dominated by large cattle ranches, extensive citrus plantations, and small communities far removed from tourist circuits, where the rhythm of life remains shaped by agricultural work and closeness to nature.

The itinerary begins in Indiantown, a community with deep Seminole roots that originally functioned as a point of exchange between Native peoples and settlers. From there, the route advances along state and secondary roads flanked by fields, wetlands, and former settlements now almost forgotten, including ghost towns and vanished railroad stops. Along the way appear barns, stables, agricultural machinery, and vast pasturelands, occasionally interrupted by rivers, creeks, and natural areas where wildlife is abundant.

Arrival in the city of Okeechobee marks one of the key points of the route. Located very close to the large lake of the same name, this small county seat concentrates much of the region’s history, from conflicts with Native tribes to the impact of the railroad and the devastating storms of the twentieth century. Farther on, the route continues northward through territories with a strong ranching tradition, former military fortifications, and extensive prairies linked to the Kissimmee River system.

The first half of the route ends in Lorida, a small and quiet community near Lake Istokpoga, surrounded by fishing camps, natural reserves, and military bases. The environment, silent and little altered by urban development, summarizes the character of this journey: a deep immersion into interior Florida, where history, landscape, and isolation combine to offer an experience far removed from the state’s tourist image.

The complete route, together with its detailed historical context, is part of Discovering Florida Volume 3.

Ruta #55 Indiantown - Okeechobee – Lorida

Okeechobee City Hall

Route #51 Harrisburg - Fisheating Creek - Venus – Palmdale

Feeding a croc during a show in Gatorama, Palmdale, FL
This cycling route enters Glades and Highlands counties, crossing one of the most solitary and evocative regions of interior Florida. Coinciding with the Halloween season, the route links former settlements now turned into ghost towns, such as Harrisburg, Hall City, Tasmania, Venus, and Palmdale—communities that emerged around the railroad, cattle ranching, and natural resource extraction, and that over time were gradually abandoned.

The landscape alternates between vast cattle ranches and open plains with wetlands and dense forests, where vegetation encroaches upon old roads and forgotten structures. One of the key points along the route is Fisheating Creek, one of the main natural preserves in southern Florida and a tributary of Lake Okeechobee. This ecological corridor hosts extraordinary biodiversity, including alligators, black bears, panthers, wild boars, and a wide variety of birds, and also preserves archaeological remains of ancient Indigenous cultures.

The journey follows narrow, quiet roads that seem to disappear into the horizon, reinforcing the sense of isolation and mystery characteristic of this region known as Bone Valley, rich in fossils and phosphates. The nearby presence of places such as Gatorama or the facilities of The Venus Project adds a singular contrast between wild nature, forgotten history, and alternative visions of the future.

The complete route, together with its detailed historical context, is part of Discovering Florida – Volume 3.

Route #45 Lake Placid – Sebring – Avon Park – Wauchula – Zolfo Springs

Old Railroad Depot, now a Museum in Avon Park, FL
Cycling route through the interior of central Florida, among lakes, agriculture, former rail lines, and small rural communities.

This route runs through the heart of central Florida, connecting a series of towns whose development was historically linked to agriculture, the railroad, and the presence of extensive lake systems. The itinerary enters a predominantly rural landscape, far from the state’s main coastal corridors.

From Lake Placid, known for its lake setting and agricultural tradition, the route advances toward Sebring, one of the most important cities in the interior, whose economy for decades combined agricultural production with industry and rail transport. The presence of former railroad infrastructure and secondary roads defines much of the journey.

The route continues through Avon Park and Wauchula, crossing areas dominated by citrus groves, pastureland, and cattle ranches. These communities reflect an interior Florida characterized by a slower pace of life and a direct relationship with the productive landscape.

The itinerary ends in Zolfo Springs, a small town whose origins are linked to the railroad and agriculture, representative of the many settlements that emerged in the interior of the state in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The route offers a clear view of interior Florida, where agricultural landscapes and historic infrastructure continue to define the territory.

The complete route and its historical context are part of Discovering Florida – Volume 2.
