Route #54 Saint Petersburg - Clearwater - Tarpon Spring

This cycling route runs through Pinellas County, a narrow peninsula located at the western edge of Tampa Bay and one of the most densely populated territories in all of Florida. Over 78 miles round trip, the itinerary links Saint Petersburg with Tarpon Spring, passing through a continuous succession of cities and communities that emerged around the railroad, tourism, and coastal development. Much of the route follows the Pinellas Trail, a former railroad branch converted into a dedicated path for pedestrians and cyclists.

The journey begins at the iconic Saint Petersburg pier, a city known as The Sunshine City for its extraordinary number of sunny days each year. Founded in the late nineteenth century with the arrival of the railroad, the city combines historic architecture, world-class museums, and a vibrant cultural life. As the route advances northward, it passes through communities such as Kenneth City, Seminole, Largo, Belleair, and Clearwater, the county seat, reflecting the transformation of former Indigenous and military settlements into major urban and tourist centers.

Further along appear Dunedin, Ozona, and Palm Harbor, communities marked by strong local identities, European traditions, and a natural setting dominated by springs, bays, and state parks. The route culminates in Tarpon Spring, a city renowned for its Greek heritage and its historic sponge-diving industry. Orthodox churches, historic docks, and religious celebrations keep a unique culture alive within the state. As a whole, the route offers a comprehensive view of the historical, cultural, and landscape development of the Pinellas peninsula, from large urban centers to coastal enclaves with deep-rooted identities.
